Why offset in Israel ?
  • Offsetting carbon emissions with carbon credits generated by Israeli projects supports the local economy and creates jobs.
  • Energy dependence is a crucial national security issue. Credits from local renewable energy and energy efficiency projects directly enhance Israel’s energy independence.
  • Israel’s electricity demand exceeds the full production capacity. Local offsetting projects and especially efficiency initiatives help direct public funds to health care and education rather than spending them on expanding power production and delivery infrastructure.
  • All offsetting projects involving municipalities, regional councils and schools involve an educational campaign directed at Israel’s next generation, strengthen the bond between the land and its people, and offer a better environmental and social horizon for Israel.

Why Offset with GEI ??

The Good Energy Initiative is a unique project established by the Heschel Center for Environmental Learning & Leadership. As a committed task-force we reduce Greenhouse Gas (GHG) source production, and support Israeli energy independence by means of energy efficiency and alternative technologies. Our work includes developing and promoting carbon reducing projects that portray additional socio-environmental benefits, and marketing the subsequent GHG reduction to organizations wishing to offset their own emissions.

The GEI is a social-venture investing revenues in non-profit environmental activity. It is the only Israeli body focusing on voluntary carbon offsetting.

Projects developed by the GEI are small and medium sized undertakings initiated in order to enhance climate-change and environmental awareness in addition to straightforward GHG reduction. We work with distant communities, educational institutions, towns and cities, non-profit organizations, factories and business companies to create projects that complement the UN’s CDM scheme for large-scale, centralized GHG reduction.

Projects are developed and reported according to the World Resource Institution guidelines. Carbon calculations include baseline fixation, baseline adjustments, carbon insurance, monitoring and verification. An additional procedure - often absent from voluntary carbon projects – is a certification process carried out by a neutral, third party academic group that criticizes the calculations. Suitable projects are awarded the “Shomer Aklim” (Climate Guard) Standard, eliminating the danger of double counting, and reducing the chance for selling poor quality, unaccounted carbon credits.

Our expertise stem from a longstanding involvement in igniting and implementing environmental changes in local and regional councils, in biodiesel production, using and selling, and in waste management methods, benefits and barriers. We cooperate with leading experts in the fields of solar electricity R&D and installment, biodiesel production, waste management, and afforestation.
