Biodiesel in School Buses and burners

Burning diesel fuel in school buses and commercial forklifts endangers users exposed to direct pollutants in addition to fossil GHG production. School children displaying immature immune systems suffer immensely from breathing CO, PAHs and particles emitted from idling or circulating buses. Factory workers are the grown-up version of this phenomena arising from operating diesel forklifts and burning process heating fuel.  Biodiesel produced from waste vegetable/animal oils significantly reduces the production of common air pollutants, while preventing the production of 2.75 kg CO2/liter when compared to using regular No. 2 diesel.

Using locally produced used-oil biodiesel at 20%-100% blends in school bus fleets and in commercial burners helps curb carbon emissions at 1 ton per 350 liters of fuel, thus supporting this new alternative fuel in Israel. Our first municipal project is planned as part Petah-Tikva’s Clean Air Act. Two local fueling stations will provide a blended biofuel to school buses and public transportation vehicles, while the municipality offers tax benefits to industrial plants agreeing to switch from fossil-based to recycled bio-based burning fuel.

Total project capacity was set for 1000 ton biodiesel/year, and the expected GHG reduction is 3100 ton/year. The city of Kfar Saba is expected to join the project shortly after implementation in Petah Tikva shows feasibility, expanding and publicizing the joint environmental benefits of cleaner air and a carbon neutral atmosphere.

The GEI does not endorse the production of biofuels from virgin plants due to the resulting environmental destruction in many parts of the world, and the global commodity fashion in which both fuel and feedstock are traded. We only support and use locally produced biodiesel made from waste oils and fats that are either rendered for animal feed, or dumped into landfills.
