Let there be light! CFL's for Private Homes

This project reduces electricity consumption by enabling citizens of Israel's periphery to switch from inefficient incandescent light bulbs (used until recently in 95% of households) to more efficient compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs). The carbon credits that we sell subsidize the cost of the CFLs, allowing us to provide them at an affordable price (15% below the bulk cost) to consumers who would otherwise never cross the initial cost barrier. Beyond the environmental benefit, access to more efficient bulbs relieves them of a significant portion of their electric bill.

The city of Eilat and the Eilot  regional council are situated in the hottest part of the country, about 300 km away from the nearest coal-fired power plant that supplies the region’s electricity. In this project we have partnered with a major initiative of the Eilot Regional Council and the Jewish Federation of Toronto to reduce the region's dependence on fossil fuel energy. Our part in this effort includes providing subsidized CFLs (as mentioned above) as well as an educational campaign, emphasizing environmental and economic considerations, intended to encourage the adoption of CFLs.

This pilot project is already responsible for a 520 ton verified reduction in CO2eq (with 131 tons sold so far), and it is expected to turn into a national project for promoting efficient lighting.  Municipal campaigns are planned with a number of regional environmental authorities. Although the project  increases the purchase of CFLs throughout the country, the verified GHG reduction is currently generated exclusively via CFLs distributed directly by the Eilot-Eilat Environmental Authority.

 Price per ton CO2eq: $9.00
